9 Best Waffle Recipes, From Breakfast to Dessert

Of all the breakfast goods we love, waffles are definitely among the most neglected. But, that's a shame, considering waffles are:

  • super easy to make;
  • a healthy option, if you add the right ingredients; and
  • crazy delicious, whether sweet or savory.

Plus, their cool honeycombed pattern is too cute to pass up and looks like a literal work of art that even kids can't resist to. So, if you are ready to bust out your wafflemaker in honor of National Waffle Iron Day (June 29th), these nine waffle recipes are a great place to start, whether you're making breakfast or capping the day off with a cozy dinner.

Breakfast & Brunch

1. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Waffles

Minimal prepping is a blessing, especially on mornings when time is of the essence. This waffle recipe keeps ingredients and prep time to a minimum, posing as an excellent choice for a quick, healthy, and filling breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Add the eggs, butter, and milk to a blender and process until smooth.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients (except for the chocolate chips) and blend until you form the batter.
  3. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Grease the waffle iron, pour the batter in ½ cup increments, and cook according to the waffle maker's instructions.
  5. Repeat until all batter is used and serve waffles with toppings of choice.

2. Greek Yogurt Blueberry Waffles

Made with Greek yogurt, blueberries, and whole-wheat flour, this waffle recipe is the perfect way to sneak some fiber, protein, and antioxidants into your body first thing in the morning. Plus, the tangy yogurt pairs great with the sweet blueberries, making you feel like you're having dessert for breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup freeze dried blueberries
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Add the blueberries to a small bowl along with ½ cup of lukewarm water and soak for 15 minutes. Squeeze away excess liquid and set aside.
  2. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Add the yogurt, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract one ingredient at a time and whisk well to combine.
  4. Fold in the blueberries, grease the waffle iron, and pour the batter in ½ cup increments. Cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown.
  5. Repeat until all batter is used and top with maple syrup before serving.

3. Strawberry Quinoa Waffles

Sometimes you may lean towards fancy in the a.m. But that doesn't mean you should go all out on ingredients and time. Ready in under 15 minutes, this simple waffle recipe can save you tons of time in the kitchen while looking (and tasting) gourmet.

Ingredients:

  1. Fill a small bowl with one cup of lukewarm water and soak the strawberries for 15 minutes. Once hydrated, squeeze away excess liquid and set aside.
  2. Add the flour, milk, and egg to a food processor and blend until smooth.
  3. Fold in the remaining ingredients and blend until you form a batter.
  4. Grease the waffle iron and pour the batter in ½ cup increments. Cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown and repeat until no batter remains.

Lunch & Dinner

4. Chicken, Broccoli, & Cheddar Waffles

Waffles aren't limited to breakfast and dessert – and this recipe that proves just that. Swapping fruit and chocolate with chicken, broccoli, and cheese, this savory take shows that the doughy treat can readily double as lunch and/or dinner.

Ingredients:

  1. Add the chicken bits and broccoli to a bowl along with 3 cups of warm water. Soak for 15 minutes. Squeeze away excess liquid and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, add 3 cups of water to a small pot and boil the potatoes until fork-tender. Once cooked, remove from the pot, transfer to a large bowl, and mash until pureed.
  3. Stir in the milk and butter and mix well to combine.
  4. Fold in the remaining ingredients until you form a batter.
  5. Grease the waffle iron, pour the batter in ½ cup increments, and cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown.
  6. Repeat until all the batter is out and serve as is, or with a side salad.

5. Zucchini Cheddar Waffles

Savory, cheesy, and packed with veggies! This creative take on the classic treat is a far cry from what your grandma used to make. But we guarantee it's just as tasty (if not more). Serve with a few strips of bacon on the side, and you'll never go back to sweet waffles again.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup dried zucchini
  • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ¼ cups Cheddar cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, add the zucchini and one cup of warm water. Soak for 15 minutes, squeeze away excess liquid, and set aside.
  2. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Stir in the egg, milk, and Greek yogurt one ingredient at a time until combined.
  4. Fold in the zucchini and one cup of the cheese and mix until you form a thick batter.
  5. Grease the waffle iron and pour the batter in ½ cup increments. Sprinkle with a little bit of the remaining cheese and cook according to the waffle maker's instructions.

6. Waffled Quesadillas

Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, this savory waffle recipe takes less than 20 minutes to prep and cook. It doesn't hurt that it's also delicious and doesn't require you to flip the quesadilla (which means both sides will be cooked evenly). PS: You can use guacamole and whole-wheat tortillas instead of sour cream and corn tortillas for a lighter version.

  1. Add the bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, and spinach to a bowl along with one cup of warm water and soak for 15 minutes. Once hydrated, squeeze away excess liquid, and set aside.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and sautée all the veggies until they turn fork-tender and fragrant (1-2 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cut the tortillas to fit the waffle iron and, then, grease it.
  4. Spread one tablespoon of sour cream on each tortilla. Place a tortilla on the waffle iron, add half of the veggie mixture on top of it, and ¼ cup of the cheese. Top with another tortilla and cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown.
  5. Repeat the same procedure with the remaining ingredients for a second quesadilla.

Dessert

7. Double Chocolate Banana Waffles

Dessert isn't our usual go-to for fiber – but this sweet waffle recipe begs to differ. Thanks to the addition of whole-wheat flour and bananas, this healthier version boasts enough good-for-you nutrients to keep you full for hours and care for your gut. Not bad for a dessert with the word "chocolate" in its title!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups whole-wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2/3 cup freeze dried bananas
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, add the bananas along with 1 ½ cups of warm water. Soak for 15 minutes. Once hydrated, squeeze away excess liquid, transfer to a large bowl, and mash until pureed.
  2. Then, whisk in the eggs, milk, olive oil, and maple syrup until everything is combined.
  3. Add the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder and whisk to combine until you form a batter.
  4. Fold in 4 tablespoons of chocolate chips.
  5. Grease the waffle iron and pour the batter. Cook according to the waffle maker's instructions and repeat with the remaining batter in ½ increments. Drizzle with maple syrup, or melted chocolate, or garnish with fruit of choice.

8. Cinnamon Apple Waffles

Baked, juiced, chopped, and served in salads... Apples can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. However, this recipe shows us that waffling the fruit is the twist we never thought of trying (and unfortunately, have missed on so far). The best part? Despite their fancy looks, these waffles are super easy to put together.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ¼ cup milk
  • 2/3 cup freeze dried apples
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

Directions:

  1. Add the apples to a bowl along with 1 ½ cup of warm water. Soak for 15 minutes, squeeze away excess liquid, and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and sugar and mix well.
  3. Fold in the eggs, milk, butter, and apples, one ingredient at a time until you form a batter.
  4. Grease the waffle iron and pour the batter on it in ½ cup increments. Cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream on top or a drizzle of maple syrup.

9. S'mores Strawberry Waffles

We already know chocolate and marshmallows are a dream team. But, try tucking them inside a fluffy waffle with a side of strawberries and you'll get the true meaning of "heaven in a bite."

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup marshmallows
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup freeze dried strawberries (sliced)

Directions:

  1. Add the strawberries to a bowl along with 1 cup of warm water. Soak for 15 minutes, squeeze away excess liquid, and set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and the coconut oil. Microwave in 15-second intervals until the chocolate is melted. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the flour, graham cracker crumbs, and baking powder. Stir in the milk, egg, olive oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until a batter is formed. Fold in the strawberries.
  4. Grease the waffle iron and pour the batter in ½ cup increments. Cook according to the waffle maker's instructions until golden brown.
  5. Once the waffles are done, top one of them with ¼ cup marshmallows and place another one on top of it to form some kind of sandwich. Cook in the waffle iron for 30 seconds until the marshmallows are melted. Drizzle with more chocolate or garnish with fruit of choice.
